The characteristic Advent star from the German company Herrnhuter laid the ground for the tradition in Sweden.
The Herrnhuter Advent Star was developed in Herrnhut in Oberlaustiz as a part of Herrnhutism, a religious Christian movement that spread with missionaries and dates back to the early 19th century. Back in year 1821, the boarding school in Niesky celebrated 50 years and during the celebration a shining star was set up. As the movement was spread, various boarding schools hanged the star on First Advent.
Gradually, they started making stars as part of the annual Christmas activities that the boarding students had. And a new tradition was born.
